Liverpool University has removed the threat of closure from its Philosophy Department. There was a huge response nationally to the threat, with very many people writing to the VC or their MP. Doubtless this response played a big part in the University’s decision.
We have responded to the AHRC’s ‘Future Directions’ consultation; you can read our submission here. Thanks to those members who suggested ’strategic themes’, some of which feature in the response.
In the AHRC’s ‘Future Directions’ consultation document, they define four new ‘core areas’ within which Arts & Humanities disciplines supposedly fall. We are concerned that the first ‘core area’ — ‘History, thought, and systems of belief’, where most of Philosophy is clearly supposed to fall — actually excludes large portions of philosophy. here’s our letter to the AHRC, suggesting some rewording.
